BUDAPEST GUIDES

Getting Around Budapest: Public Transport Guide

Getting around Budapest is surprisingly easy once you understand the basics. Metro, trams, buses and trolleybuses cover almost every part of the city, while BudapestGO puts routes, live information and tickets in one place. The only part that can feel confusing at first is knowing which ticket to buy — and, importantly, when it needs to be validated.

GETTING ORIENTED

A CITY THAT IS EASY TO MOVE THROUGH

Budapest may look large on a map, but everyday journeys are surprisingly straightforward. Central Pest is highly walkable, the metro handles longer cross-city trips, and the tram network often turns the journey itself into part of the experience. If you are staying for several weeks or months, the system becomes even easier. The same few tram lines, metro stations and routes quickly become familiar, and BudapestGO makes planning unfamiliar journeys simple.

THE SHORT VERSION — Walk when you can. Use trams and metro when you need them. Keep BudapestGO on your phone.

THE BASICS

UNDERSTANDING BUDAPEST’S TRANSPORT NETWORK

Budapest’s public transport system is built around a combination of metro, tram, bus, trolleybus and suburban railway services. In the center, you rarely need to think about the entire network at once. Most everyday journeys involve walking, one metro line or one of the major tram routes.

01 / METRO

Fastest option for longer journeys across the city, operating four central lines.

02 / TRAM

Most useful way to move around central Budapest, following the grand boulevards and riverbanks.

03 / BUS

Fills the gaps between metro and tram, running extensive routes and helpful night services.

04 / TROLLEYBUS

Common around central and eastern Pest, providing eco-friendly transit on historical streets.

05 / HÉV

Suburban railway lines connecting the center with outer green districts and nearby towns.

LOCAL TIP — Do not try to memorize the network. After a few days you will probably use the same handful of lines repeatedly.

UNDERGROUND

FOUR LINES, MOST OF THE CITY WITHIN REACH

M1 — YELLOW LINE

Historic Millennium Underground, the second oldest underground railway in the world, linking downtown with City Park.

M2 — RED LINE

Crosses deep under the Danube, connecting central Pest with Buda's main transit hubs including Déli and Batthyány tér.

M3 — BLUE LINE

Runs north–south through Pest, linking the airport transfer hub at Kőbánya-Kispest with northern urban districts.

M4 — GREEN LINE

The newest automated line, linking southwestern Buda with Keleti station through striking award-winning concrete architecture.

ABOVE GROUND

THE TRANSPORT YOU WILL PROBABLY REMEMBER

Budapest’s yellow trams are more than a postcard image. They are one of the most useful parts of the city’s transport network.

TRAM 4 & 6

Grand Boulevard lines connecting Pest's major transport hubs. Running 24/7, Tram 6 is the city's tireless urban heartbeat.

TRAM 2

Widely cited as one of Europe's most scenic rail lines, tracing the Danube shoreline directly past the Hungarian Parliament.

TRAM 47 & 49

Vintage yellow cars gliding across the historic green metal of Liberty Bridge, linking central Pest with the historic slopes of Buda.

IN BUDAPEST, THE TRAM IS OFTEN PART OF THE CITY EXPERIENCE RATHER THAN JUST THE WAY YOU GET THERE.

Buy via BudapestGO

BUYING A TICKET IS NOT THE SAME AS VALIDATING IT

For paper tickets, you must punch them using the mechanical/electric boxes immediately upon boarding trams/buses or at metro gates. For digital tickets, you must scan the external QR code sticker located near the doors before stepping inside.

AIRPORT EXCEPTION (100E EXPRESS)

Standard single tickets, time-based tickets, and daily/monthly passes are NOT valid on the 100E Airport Express line. This shuttle requires a dedicated airport ticket (purchasable inside the app or at ticketing terminals) to ride between the city center and Liszt Ferenc International Airport.

Arriving in Budapest

From the Airport to the City

Option 01

100E Airport Express

Direct, 24/7 Service • 2,500 HUF Fares

The simplest and fastest option. The 100E connects Liszt Ferenc International Airport directly with Deák Ferenc tér (the central hub of Pest). Running continuously day and night, it takes about 40 minutes. Please note: standard travel passes require a 1,000 HUF add-on to be valid on this dedicated route.

Option 02

200E Bus + Metro M3

Regular Network • Normal Local Fares

The classic municipal transit route. Board the 200E bus outside the terminal to Kőbánya-Kispest, then transfer to the clean, newly renovated Metro Line M3 (blue line) heading north to reach central Pest. This connection accepts standard local tickets, time-based digital tickets, or standard tourist transit passes.

SOMETIMES, DON’T BOARD ANYTHING.

CENTRAL BUDAPEST IS BETTER AT WALKING SPEED.

Public transport is excellent, but many journeys in central Pest are short enough that walking is simpler. Walking also teaches you Budapest faster.

MOL BUBI

Budapest’s public bike-sharing system relaunched August 2026 with classic and electric-assist bikes. Pay-as-you-go available for visitors.

THE LONGER-STAY DIFFERENCE

AFTER A WEEK, YOU STOP THINKING ABOUT TRANSPORT.

At first, the network is a collection of colored lines. Then you know tram 4/6, you recognize Blaha Lujza tér, you know when walking is quicker. Familiarity is the advantage of staying longer.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

IF YOU REMEMBER ONLY FIVE THINGS

01

Download BudapestGO

The official app is indispensable. Use it for route planning, instant ticket purchasing, and live vehicle tracking across all city networks.

02

Validate single tickets correctly

Paper tickets must be physically punched or scanned on board. Digital tickets require scanning the QR code near the entrance before you step inside.

03

Check monthly pass for long stays

If you are staying for more than three days, a 15-day or 30-day pass is often cheaper and removes any daily ticket validation hassle entirely.

04

Tram 4/6 and Metro M2 are useful for District VII

These primary transit arteries run late and provide rapid links to the lively ruin bars, galleries, and bohemian hubs of District VII.

05

100E has separate airport fare rules

The direct express line to Deák Ferenc Square requires a dedicated airport single ticket. Regular transit passes, standard singles, or daily travelcards are not valid.
