The Budapest Transport Corporation (BKK) integrates metro lines, trams, buses, and suburban railways into a highly cohesive system. One single ticket or pass grants you seamless access to everything.

THE METRO NETWORK

Budapest's underground transit is fast, reliable, and deeply historic. Four primary arteries cross the city to connect almost all key train and bus hubs.

M1 — Historic Millennium line running directly beneath Andrássy Boulevard.

M3 — Heavy-duty North-South workhorse running through Pest.

TRAMS & OVERLANDS

The city's tram system is world-class. Tram 2 is globally famous, winding along the scenic Danube Promenade. Lines 4 and 6 loop the grand boulevard continuously, running 24 hours a day.

BUSES, TROLLEYS & HÉV

Blue buses reach areas not served by rails. Red trolleybuses glide silently through Pest neighborhoods, while the green HÉV suburban railways connect you to surrounding getaways like Szentendre.

UNDERSTANDING TRANSFERS

Standard Single Tickets do not allow transfer between different transit types (e.g. bus to tram). A new ticket is required unless you are transferring between different metro lines (M1, M2, M3, M4) underground, which is permitted on a single ticket.

In Budapest, physical and digital tickets must be validated before the journey begins. A ticket that is bought but not stamped or scanned is functionally invalid. Knowing the difference between the physical punch and the digital tap is essential to avoid instant penalties.

Paper Tickets

Locate the physical orange or red box at the metro gate entrance or immediately after stepping aboard streetcars and buses. Insert your paper ticket into the slot and pull the black handle firmly towards you (or await the automatic stamp) to punch holes or ink-stamp the exact travel time. Keep this ticket safe until your trip is completed.

BUYING A TICKET DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN YOU’RE READY TO RIDE.

In Budapest, purchasing a ticket is only half the process. To prevent heavy fines, every single ticket must be validated immediately upon boarding or entering the transit station platform. Fare inspectors operate extensively and do not make exceptions for visitors.

1. Paper Tickets (Physical validation)

Locate the orange or yellow validating machines on board vehicles (or at metro entrance gates). Insert your ticket into the slot. For manual punchers, pull the black handle firmly towards you to punch holes. For digital stampers, insert the ticket until you hear a beep and see the stamped date and time.

2. Digital Tickets (NFC/QR validation)

Launch the BudapestGO app and tap your active ticket. Scan the NFC validation sticker located on the outside of the vehicle near the doors (or at metro entrance pillars). If NFC fails, tap 'Scan QR Code' to scan the printed barcode. Once validated, an animated symbol will appear—you must show this to drivers or inspectors.

Navigating Budapest's public transit network is straightforward, but choosing the right fare is crucial. For individual journeys, single tickets are highly affordable but require strict compliance. If you plan to transfer or need flexibility, consider the 30-minute or 90-minute time-based tickets that cover unlimited transfers within their duration. THE RULE TO REMEMBER

Single tickets MUST be validated immediately upon boarding the tram, bus, or trolleybus, or inside the station barriers before entering the metro platforms. Keep your validated ticket until the end of your journey. Conversely, multi-day travelcards (24h, 72h, or passes) do not require validation, as their validity times are set at the time of purchase.

Direct Airport Bus (100E)
